Preventing meningitis

85% of meningococcal meningitis in Australia is due to Meningococcus B.
The Bexsero Meningococcal B vaccine is currently available at a cost of about $150 per dose. It is highly effective and recommended for all children aged under two, as well as adolescents aged 15 to 19 and any child or young adult with a non-functioning or absent spleen.
The vaccine creates a vigorous immune response and children aged under four should have Panadol or Dymadon half an hour before the vaccination. This should be followed by 2 more doses of paracetamol, given 4 to 6 hours apart.
You will need a script, so book in with your GP to discuss the vaccine and how it specifically affects your child.
