Coronavirus – the UK has missed the boat – March 16

The United Kingdom has a population of about 60 million, just over twice our population of 25 million.

They have had exponential growth in the number of cases in the past two weeks and have made the transition from a pre-epidemic with linear growth in numbers to exponential growth.  Yesterday alone saw an extra 350 cases added in one day. That’s like us having an extra 160 new cases in a day.

They are now exporting Covid-19 to the rest of the world, including Australia, and will have to enact extreme measures including lock-downs.
The UK did not institute the border protection that our Government enacted at the weekend.

Hopefully we are now much safer having plugged the leak to a large extent. The corollary of this is that the economic effect is likely to be much smaller in Australia.
